Taking a Seat, Taking a Stand
Coal miners from the Spanish autonomous regions of Asturias, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalucia and Aragon protest against the government's cuts to coal subsidies during a sit-in, part of a mass march spearheaded by the country's major trade unions. The miners rallied in Madrid after walking for nearly three weeks after leaving the pits where they work. Spanish mining towns, mainly in the north, have had their subsidies cut from 301 million euros ($367 million) last year to 111 million euros ($135 million) this year.
