Hackers aren't always evildoers bent on destruction or stealing information. Some of the most famous hackers have indeed ended up behind bars. But many have gone on to become productive citizens -- founding companies, becoming billionaires and authoring best-sellers.

With computer attacks increasingly grabbing the headlines, here's a look back at some of the most famous hackers, many of whom have found themselves at one time or another on both sides of the law.
