College football’s first playoff, instituted after a generation of pleas for its creation, was so successful that it has already led to calls for expansion.

Fourth-seeded Ohio State University beat second seed University of Oregon 42-20 last night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, completing the first year of ESPN’s 12-year, $5.64 billion contract to host a four-team football playoff at the top level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
