German Far Right’s Violent Riot Prompts Get-Tough Message

The scenes sent a chill through Germany: more than 4,000 soccer hooligans and neo-Nazis raging through the streets of Cologne, hurling bottles and stones at police, who had gathered in their hundreds to fend off the attacks from a protest rapidly spiraling out of control.

It was the afternoon of Oct. 26 and the violence appeared to take the authorities by surprise. More than 40 police officers were injured, several police cars damaged and 17 demonstrators arrested before the march was disbanded.
