In 2022 it looked as if Burberry Group Plc had the best opportunity in decades to become a British luxury champion. It had appointed Jonathan Akeroyd, who’d previously put the va-va-voom back into Versace, as chief executive officer, and named star designer Daniel Lee as creative director.
