An eclectic crowd is gathering at Bonhams auction house in New York, bored-looking art dealers and well-heeled retirees taking their seats alongside people with frizzy gray hair, galaxy-print backpacks and Hawaiian shirts.

The works generating the most buzz — and speculation — on this April afternoon are four original paintings by Bob Ross, the beloved art teacher who spent two decades teaching Americans to paint “happy little trees” on public television.
