Under Hollub’s leadership, Oxy became the first US oil company to set a net-zero target, although the path it chose is atypical. Rather than transitioning to producing renewables, or reducing oil and gas production, Oxy wants to make “net-zero oil” by investing heavily in direct-air-capture technology. But how will Oxy build out and fund that technology, and is it really the best way to tackle climate change?
