Violent clashes between protesting workers and police marked a fifth day of strike at the Chuquicamata mine, signaling a prolonged disruption to supply from the world’s largest copper producer.

Police special forces intervened in the early hours of Tuesday as workers at Codelco’s Chuquicamata project in northern Chile tried to set up camp at the mine’s entrance, the three striking unions said in a joint statement. Several workers were injured by tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons, and 12 people were arrested, the unions said.
