What a difference a day makes. Europe’s richest people added $27.5 billion to their fortunes Monday after European stocks surged to a 17-month high and the euro gained strength after candidate Emmanuel Macron emerged as the favorite in the French presidential election. The 2.6 percent increase for the Europeans was the best of any regional group on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Spanish retail mogul Amancio Ortega had the day’s biggest gain, adding $2.7 billion and once again passing Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos to become the second-richest person on the planet.
