Seventeen Indian soldiers were killed Sunday morning in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir in the deadliest militant attack in the restive area in years.

The Indian army said in a statement that a group of “heavily armed terrorists” attacked a base in Uri in the early hours of the morning, and that four of them had been killed. Prime Minister Modi said those behind the assault would be punished.
