The U.K. government said it won’t have to pay compensation to Electricite de France SA if Prime Minister Theresa May decides to abandon the Hinkley Point C nuclear project because there isn’t a signed contract for what would be the nation’s first new nuclear plant in decades.

“The government is not responsible for any of the project costs until a contract is signed for Hinkley,” the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said Wednesday in an e-mailed response to questions.
