Japan’s four largest telecommunications carriers now have a higher market value than the country’s seven largest automakers combined as a stronger yen cuts into earnings and share prices for companies dependent on overseas sales. The phone service providers last surpassed automakers during the global financial crisis in 2008, when the yen also soared.
