The U.S. trade deficit widened in May by the most in nearly a year as exports fell and a pickup in domestic demand led to more imports of consumer goods and industrial materials.

The gap grew by 10.1 percent, the most since August 2015, to $41.1 billion from the prior month, Commerce Department figures showed Wednesday. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a $40 billion shortfall.
