American service companies expanded in April at the fastest pace in four months, signaling the economy is firming up after a weak start to the year.

The Institute for Supply Management’s non-manufacturing index rose to 55.7 from 54.5 in March, the Tempe, Arizona-based group’s data showed Wednesday. Readings above 50 signal growth. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey called for 54.8.
