Iceland’s government defeated a no-confidence vote triggered by the Panama leaks affair after sacrificing its prime minister to public outrage and promising an early election.

Demonstrations at the country’s parliament extended into a sixth day, attracting more than 5,500 protesters, a day after the ruling coalition of Progressive and Independence parties defeated a motion submitted by the opposition by 38 to 25. The coalition had expected the result.
