France Says 50 Riot Forces Posted on Greece’s Lesbos

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Saturday 50 French riot policemen have been deployed on the island of Lesbos in eastern Greece as part of an effort to reinforce European Union borders.

France will also deploy 22 policemen and 50 gendarmes on the island of Chios on Sunday and Monday to join Frontex, the European agency in charge of securing external borders, Cazeneuve said in an e-mailed statement.

The minister said 78 additional police personnel would travel to Greece as well “in the coming days.”

In a letter to the European Commission on March 28, France pledged to help Greece strengthen its external borders, which are suspected of being used by potential Islamic State terrorists to enter the EU.
