Poland is reopening its debate over abortion, with the head of its conservative government saying she privately backs a total ban on such procedures.

The country where the vast majority of residents consider themselves Roman Catholics already has one of the European Union’s most restrictive abortion regulations, along with Ireland and Malta. Poland limits such operations to pregnancies stemming from rape or incest, and cases where there is a serious health risk to the mother or foetus.
