Cadillac is overhauling its midsize SUV, the brand’s bestselling model. The new XT5 was introduced with a publicity stunt in November, but it wasn't until Thursday morning that General Motors rolled out the equally head-turning price tag: $39,995 for starters, just half a martini shy of $40,000.

That’s right in line with the up-market German brands that Cadillac is gunning for these days. Audi’s Q5 SUV starts at $40,900, and drivers can get in a BMW X3 for $38,950, a sum that is also on the window sticker of the Mercedes GLC. The base price on the new Cadillac SUV also marks a 4 percent increase over the model it's replacing, the SRX.
