Gambian President Yahya Jammeh declared the West African nation an Islamic republic, saying it makes sense because Muslims make up the majority.
Citizens are still allowed to follow any faith they choose and no dress code will be imposed, Jammeh said, according to a press statement read by the state broadcaster. While the declaration is meant to help erase the legacy of colonialism, Gambia will maintain its relationships with foreign governments, he said. The country gained independence from Britain in 1965.
