Queensland Passes Producer-Backed Sugar Marketing Legislation

Queensland cane growers will be able to choose who sells their sugar after the state’s parliament passed a bill, undermining attempts by millers to increase their say in marketing of the commodity.
The legislation will help maintain competition in the industry, according to producers’ group Canegrowers. The Australian Sugar Milling Council says it will work through all legal and government avenues to quash the change, calling it a “re-regulation” of Queensland sugar. The bill was approved on Wednesday, according to a statement on the parliament’s website.
