Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. formally challenged the Pentagon’s selection of Northrop Grumman Corp. to build a heavy bomber valued at as much as $80 billion, calling the process “fundamentally flawed.”

The protest triggers a review by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, which will render a decision by the 100-day due date, or Feb. 16, spokesman Chuck Young said Friday by e-mail. Boeing and Lockheed had signaled they might take the step after Northrop was chosen as the winner last week. The Air Force said it “will fully support the GAO’s independent process.”
