German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government is leaving Volkswagen AG to fend for itself in embracing cleaner engines as the company seeks to shake off its diesel scandal.
Executives at VW’s Wolfsburg headquarters say they plan a shift in focus to more plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles in response to the emission controversy. While Merkel aims to see 1 million electric cars on German roads by 2020, she’s offering none of the help to carmakers that the French government provides.
