U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said working grandparents will be given the right to take time off to help care for their grandchildren as part of a move to make parental leave more flexible.

Mothers and fathers will have the option to share part of their leave entitlement with one of their parents, the governing Conservative Party said in an e-mailed statement on Sunday. Parents will be able to share as much as 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of parental-leave pay, currently 139.58 pounds ($212) a week or 90 percent of average weekly earnings, whichever is lower, with a nominated working grandparent.
