Gunfire and explosions were heard in Mutakura, north of Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura, on Saturday when police officers tried to arrest a man who had recently escaped from prison, a resident said.

A number of people have been wounded, Nzambiyakira Lambert, a resident of the area, said by phone. Mutakura is a stronghold for protesters opposed to President Pierre Nkurunziza’s third term in office.
