Greater spending on refugee camps may help reduce the number of Africans risking their lives in search of asylum in Europe, aid agencies said.
More than 300,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean Sea so far this year, with almost 200,000 of them landing in Greece and a further 110,000 in Italy, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency. At least 2,500 refugees have gone missing or drowned during the crossing from countries including Libya, it said Aug. 28. Last year, 3,500 people died or were reported missing making the same journey, according to the UN.
