Acciona SA, Spain’s second-largest clean-energy company, will invest $343 million to build a 247-megawatt solar farm in Chile’s Atacama desert.
El Romero will be the biggest solar farm in Latin America, the Madrid-based company said in a statement Thursday. The plan will start operations on 2017.
With 777,360 silicon photovoltaic modules, the plant will produce about 505 gigawatt-hours of clean energy a year, equivalent to the electricity demand of 245,000 homes in Chile.
The project is part of contracts awarded in a tender last year. Acciona has the commitment to supply electricity to distribution concession holders in Chile’s Central Interconnected System, starting in 2018. The company will invest a total of $500 million to build renewable energy projects it committed to the auction.
