The death of a Syrian boy whose body washed up on Turkey’s shores has shaken Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party in the middle of Canada’s election.

Immigration Minister Chris Alexander interrupted his campaign Thursday to return to the capital after the Ottawa Citizen reported the refugee claim of the boy, Aylan Kurdi, and his family was rejected in June after being personally handed to Alexander by another lawmaker.
