Satoru Iwata has been the face of Nintendo Co. for 13 years, fronting everything from product announcements to analyst meetings. His sudden death has vaulted two company veterans to the helm of the gamemaker just as it shifts into the hyper-competitive smartphone market.

Shigeru Miyamoto, 62, is Nintendo’s chief game designer and is well-known as the creator of the Mario and Zelda series. Genyo Takeda, 66, heads the company’s research and is the architect behind the Wii console. The two will lead management while a formal successor is decided, Nintendo said Monday.
