The European Parliament called on the Democratic Republic of Congo to free imprisoned pro-democracy activists and respect free speech and assembly as tensions rise in the country before elections.

Since January, Congo has arrested hundreds of people who oppose attempts by President Joseph Kabila to remain in power beyond next year, when his second and final term ends. Several opposition politicians and activists remain in prison, including two leaders of the pro-democracy youth group, Filimbi, who were arrested in March.
