South Africa Gold Wage Talks Deadlock as Union Plans Dispute

The second-biggest union in South Africa’s gold industry, which last year led a five-month platinum strike, said pay talks with the country’s bullion producers deadlocked and that it plans to declare a dispute.
The move by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction, which represents 30 percent of gold employees, is the first step toward a strike. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd., Sibanye Gold Ltd. and Harmony Gold Mining Co., the country’s biggest producers of the metal, will continue to negotiate with the National Union of Mineworkers, the largest labor group and other employee organizations.
