New Zealand grounded all planes after a radar failure prompted authorities to halt commercial flights across the nation, stranding hundreds of passengers including at the main hub of Auckland.

The outage was caused by an internal network fault at about 2:41 p.m. local time and about 50 airborne flights were affected, Airways New Zealand, the government agency that operates the radar and air traffic control system, said in a statement on its website. Limited operations resumed 80 minutes later and full services half an hour after that, the agency said. Aircraft were permitted to land during the outage.
