U.S. President Barack Obama said European Union governments are committed to extending sanctions on Russia and keeping them in place until President Vladimir Putin’s government backs off destabilizing actions in Ukraine.

The U.S. and its allies will continue providing economic support and other assistance to Ukraine as it fights off separatists backed by Russia, Obama said at a news conference concluding the Group of Seven summit in southern Germany.
