Shake Shack Inc.’s plan to grow bigger than some of fast-food’s best-known chains may be a tough goal to reach.

The company says it can sell custard and burgers in 450 locations across the U.S. -- that’s more than White Castle, Smashburger or In-N-Out Burger. As the New York icon opens more units outside of the East Coast, it will have to contend with popular regional chains and diners who aren’t familiar with the brand. While the growth plan is a long-term target, meaning Shake Shack has years to pull it off, adding that many locations won’t be easy.
