Tens of thousands of Hong Kong residents marked the anniversary of China’s Tiananmen Square crackdown Thursday while reflecting on recent street protests that caused rifts in the city’s own democracy movement.

China’s perceived influence over Hong Kong and the demonstrations that occupied key streets for 79 days last year were highlighted at the vigil to commemorate the suppression of democracy protests. Past June 4 vigils in the former British colony have focused more on promoting human rights across the border than on issues in Hong Kong.
