Burundi’s political opposition resumed protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term as aid officials warned the exodus of refugees to Tanzania is creating a humanitarian emergency.
Demonstrators rallied Tuesday in pockets of Bujumbura, the capital, with soldiers attempting to disperse some of the participants, local resident Clarine Nkurunziza said. At least 20 people have died in the past three weeks in demonstrations opposing Nkurunziza’s candidacy in June elections, which also triggered a failed coup attempt last week.
