Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is vying to overhaul Italy’s election system in a bid to deliver more stable governments and bolster the economy in the face of the longest recession on record.
Renzi, Italy’s third premier since Silvio Berlusconi was forced out in late 2011 at the height of the debt crisis, has staked his political future on an electoral law, saying he’ll quit if it is rejected by the chamber of deputies, or lower house in Rome, in a vote due in the early hours of Tuesday.
