Japan Inches Toward Recognizing Same-Sex Union With Tokyo Vote

Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward became Japan’s first local authority to recognize same-sex partnerships, a move that is likely to spur a backlash from conservatives in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The ward’s assembly passed an ordinance Tuesday to issue certificates to gay couples giving their relationships “equivalency to marriage.”
