Oman’s leader Sultan Qaboos returned to the Persian Gulf country on Monday after an eight-month absence that stoked concern about political succession in the oil-rich monarchy and U.S. ally.
The 74-year-old ruler flew back from Germany, where he’s been receiving medical treatment, according to state television, which broadcast pictures of the monarch leaving his plane and walking without assistance, though he appeared frail. The Royal Court said Qaboos returned to the country “in complete health.” During his absence it hadn’t disclosed details about his health, saying only that he was following a “fixed medical program.”
