Japan Inches Closer to Tougher Defense Stance

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party reached agreement with its coalition partner Friday on legal changes to toughen the country’s defense stance amid China’s increasing assertiveness in the region.
“The security environment is changing enormously and there can be no let-up in thinking about how we deal with it from the point of view of national safety and international stability,” Defense Minister Gen Nakatani told reporters after party representatives announced they had reached an agreement.
