China Lead in Treasury Holdings Narrows to Below $1 Billion

China’s holdings of U.S. government debt declined for a fifth straight month in January, as Japan pulled within $1 billion of regaining its status as the biggest foreign holder of Treasuries.

China held $1.2391 trillion of Treasuries as of January, $5.2 billion lower than a month earlier, according to U.S. Treasury Department data released Monday in Washington. Japan increased its ownership by $7.7 billion to $1.2386 trillion. Japan last surpassed China in Treasury holdings in 2008, according to previously released data.
