U.K. lawmakers voted to force Imperial Tobacco Group Plc, British American Tobacco Plc and other cigarette manufacturers to sell their products in standardized packaging in an effort to reduce the appeal of smoking.
Lawmakers in the lower chamber, the House of Commons, voted by 367 to 113 Wednesday in favor of the legislation, which would also apply to hand-rolling tobacco. The move also requires approval from the unelected upper chamber, the House of Lords, which is due to vote on Monday.
