Three suspects in the assassination of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov may have been tortured in detention, according to a member of the Kremlin human rights council.

Zaur Dadaev, a former deputy chief commander of the Sever police batallion in Russia’s Chechnya region, and brothers Anzor and Shagid Gabushev have bruises and marks on their bodies that may indicate beatings and torture, council member Andrei Babushkin said in a statement published Wednesday on the group’s website after visiting them in jail. He sent a complaint asking the heads of the Investigative Committee and the Prosecutor General’s Office to carry out a review.
