Egypt Removes Police Boss Who Helped Quell Islamist Protests

Egypt replaced the interior minister who helped quash Islamist protests after the army ousted an elected president in 2013. The decision comes a week before the country holds a conference to attract investment and boost its economy.
Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar replaced Mohamed Ibrahim as interior minister, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab told reporters in Cairo on Thursday. Ibrahim backed then-army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi after he led the overthrow of elected Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, then oversaw a crackdown on protests by Mursi supporters that resulted in hundreds of deaths.
