Assailants in Bangladesh’s capital hacked to death well-known U.S. blogger Avijit Roy and critically wounded his wife in a machete attack that police said may have been carried out by an extremist group.
Roy and his wife, Rafida Ahmed, were leaving a book fair on the Dhaka University campus on Feb. 26 when the attackers struck Roy from behind, Police Inspector Mozammel Hoque said by phone. They then turned their machetes on Ahmed when she tried to save him. She lost a finger and is being treated at a hospital with critical injuries, Hoque said.
