A Hezbollah-led offensive against militants south of the Syrian capital Damascus is strengthening the influence of the Lebanese Shiite group over Syria’s sensitive border region with Israel.

Hezbollah and Syrian forces have captured some towns located between Damascus and the border with the Israeli-held Golan Heights, the head of the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Rami Abderrahman said by phone.
