Nickelodeon’s animated SpongeBob returned to theaters over the weekend, delivering a No. 1 opening for Paramount Pictures and outpunching “Jupiter Ascending,” a costly sci-fi release from Warner Bros.

“The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water,” the second feature film based on the Nick TV character, collected $55.4 million in U.S and Canadian cinemas, Rentrak Corp. said Monday in an e-mailed statement. “Jupiter Ascending,” a $176 million production from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow, opened with just $18.4 million.
