Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird resigned from cabinet Tuesday, depriving Prime Minister Stephen Harper of one of his longest-serving aides before elections this year.

Baird, 45, told lawmakers in an address to parliament he informed Harper of his plans last night. He’ll resign his seat in the coming weeks and won’t run for office in this year’s federal vote, which is due to be held by October.
