Wi-Fi Inventors’ Cut of IPhone 6 Sales to Shrink in Vote

With billions of dollars in future profit at stake, technology companies have divided into factions over a proposal that would cut the fees Apple Inc. and other smartphone and tablet makers have to pay for Wi-Fi features.

A key part of the proposal would base payments on the price of some components of the device rather than on the cost of the whole product, as is the norm now. An industry group that sets technology standards is poised to approve the change this week, now that the Justice Department said the proposal wouldn’t violate antitrust laws and “has the potential to benefit competition.”
