U.S. and Cuban diplomats concluded what both sides called encouraging talks on restoring ties after five decades, as Cuban officials called for their country to be removed from the State Department’s list of nations sponsoring terrorism.
While representatives of both countries smiled to reporters and said the talks in Havana were productive, negotiators still have to deal with “profound” differences before relations can be fully normalized, Josefina Vidal, Cuba’s top diplomat for North American affairs said Thursday. Talks will resume in Washington as soon as next month, according to two officials who weren’t authorized to discuss the plans publicly.
