NATO jets intercepted more Russian military planes over the Baltic Sea than in the past weeks combined as Lithuanian media said army units were put on higher alert because of military moves in Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s aircraft confronted 28 planes today, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers, over neutral waters near Latvia’s maritime border, the Baltic country’s armed forces said on Twitter. Yesterday, 13 Russian planes were intercepted in the same region, while on Sept. 6, Estonian Defense Forces said a “large number” of Russian military aircraft were flying above the Baltic Sea toward the Kaliningrad region.
